Spinning Plates

Nov 15, 2020

Teaching. Leading. Dealing with behaviour. Phone calls home. Emails. Checking homework completion. Live lessons. Revision sessions. Professional development. Supporting colleagues. Marking. Planning. Standardising. Meetings. We are not just teachers. We are expert plate spinners ?

We spin plates every day. Some days comfortably and with ease and grace and some days it feels a bit like we are panicking and wobbling and destined for plates to smash. This is about priorities. Weighing up the cost of letting one of our plates drop in order to see to the others with steady and focused hands is really important. Finding that balance when we are all low-key perfectionists ? can sometimes feel tough, but maybe this needs to become a non-negotiable. Looking at our to-do lists and thinking, okay – what needs to be my focus for today and what can wait? Setting daily priorities can mean that we spin less plates each day and therefore hold less anxiety about the potential breakage from juggling too much.
